Arrival of the year – Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale, who arrived in Boston after a trade with the Chicago White Sox, was named the winner over notable newcomers Al Horford of the Celtics, Charlie McAvoy of the Bruins, Chris Hogan of the Patriots, and Red Sox teammate Andrew Benintendi.

In his first season with the Red Sox, Sale made 32 starts, going 17-8 with a 2.90 ERA to finish runner-up for the Cy Young Award. He became just the 16th pitcher to record 300 strikeouts in a single season, and finished the year with 308, five short of the franchise record set by Pedro Martinez in 1999.
